Bikes for Kids program encourages learning in Triad

HIGH POINT, NC (WGHP) It’s a big welcome to High Point Central High School for these Guilford County Schools third graders.

The drum line and cheerleaders make them feel special. And these students are. Today, they know they could win a new bike. It’s all part of the Bikes for Kids program brought to North Carolina by Bob Krumroy.

“I knew we can make an incredible impact on the school system. And so today, we work with 1,857 kids this year. Last year, it was over 1,850 kids as well. Next year, we hope it will be over 2,100 kids. And these are all kids that are at Title I schools, third graders that we’re trying to get them to read a book. Dream big, work hard. Be kind. Never give up,” said Krumroy.

The students read a book about character traits and discuss it in class. Then they write an essay on their dreams, and how they plan to make them come true. But it doesn’t stop there. The students know their essays could win them a new bicycle.

According to Krumroy, “they believe there are competing for three bikes for their school.”

And that’s what brings them to the big reveal, like this one at High Point Central High School. They are introduced to real-life examples of former Guilford County Schools students who have dreamed big, worked hard and achieved their goals and it’s where some of the kids will be announced as winners and have their essays read. But Krumroy and his sponsors have a big surprise for all of the students.

“When we finally announced, we get down to that final bike and then we do a fake huddle with our sponsors, and we say we got good news and bad news,” said Krumroy. “The bad news, we got one bike left here. But the good news is your sponsors have read these papers, said these are great. So what if we give everybody a bike.”

The result is loud cheers of joy.

“It’s more than a bike. It’s much more than a bike. It’s a it’s a word of affirmation. It says we believe in you,” said Krumroy. “We think you’re smart. We think you can set goals. And we believe without a question you can achieve your goals.”

And the years of rewarding the kids have paid off.

“We see the difference we’re making in these kids lives. And we’ve had accolades from the Department of Education, the United States, for the work that we’ve done,” He said. Adding “the analytics we do show better attendance, better grades, some the best grades of all the grades in the schools. Our work, our come out of the classes and we do this work with.”

He also reminds everyone in attendance that this is not a bike giveaway. He tells the kids, “Go home and tell your parents I didn’t win a bike, dad or mom. I earned my bike because the hard work that I did, that’s an unbelievable message for these kids to go back with.”

To dream big, work hard. Be kind and never give up!

The bike giveaways aren’t just happening at several high schools in Gilford County, but all across the state.
